LIONS LOW VISION CENTER
7703 Floyd Curl Dr.
Allied Health Sciences Bldg. (1.116)
San Antonio, TX 78229

| The Lions Low Vision Center (LLVC) offers services to sighted individuals
that have suffered degradation in their visual acuity because of diabetic
retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, eye injury, or eye disease
of some type. The opportunities to help low vision individuals and
their families adapt to their changed circumstances can become service
opportunities for the Lions of MD-2.
LLVC has four separate programs that overlap slightly and support each other: -A Clinical Low Vision Center for the treatment of patients. -A Basic Research Program in the causes and cures of impaired vision. -A Clinical Research program in low vision rehabilitation, including the development of artificial vision. -An education program in the treatment and
rehabilitation of low vision research, education, and services.
VIDEOS: There are two videos available on the Lions Low
Vision Center of Texas (LLVC) that include its groundbreaking and a follow-up
video made in 2005. Copies can be obtained from the Lions Sight Research
Foundation (LSRF) for clubs to use as a program or for information.
LLVC HISTORY In February 2000, at a memorable Council of Governors Meeting in Kerrville, the MD-2 Council acting on a Resolution put forth by the Cabinet of District 2-A2, unanimously endorsed the creation of a "Lions Low Vision Research and Education Center" in partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio. In August 2002, International President Kay K. Fukushima presided at the official "Groundbreaking" for the Lions Low Vision Center of Texas on the campus of the UTHSC/SA. In recognition of the magnitude of the project, he told the audience: "This Lions initiative and partnership represents the best of community service and will have a lasting impact on Texas, our nation, and the World." Low vision or impaired vision is usually defined as any chronic visual deficit that impairs everyday function and is not correctable by eyeglasses or contact lenses. Other definitions would include visual problems that hamper the performance and enjoyment of everyday activities. In a clinical setting, visual impairment is typically defined as visual acuity with best correction in the better eye worse that 20/200 or visual field constriction of no less that 20 degrees. But, however we define "low vision", it is often an overlooked and under treated health issue in the U.S. and around the world. |
